Export Controls

To protect faculty, staff, trainees and the University, the UC Office of the President developed the UCOP International Compliance page

Export Compliance

There are regulations under which certain technology, commodities and software can be transmitted overseas to individuals, including U.S. citizens, or to a foreign national on U.S. soil. The Department of State and the Department of Commerce oversee export regulations. Most (but not all!) UC research activities are excluded from export controls under a general exception for "fundamental research". The exception is nullified when there is a non disclosure agreement signed by the faculty member. Faculty cannot sign these documents without first sending them to their campus Office of Legal Affairs. Any faculty member who has a signed non disclosure form should investigate whether that document will affect the export status of the information.  Many things require a license to export, ask your vendor for documentation on the specific items, and check in with your campus export controll officer, or the UC office.
